Standard Shopping versus Performance Max

Standard Shopping versus Performance Max

The two campaign types are not competing versions of the same thing. One buys Shopping placements and shows you what happened; the other buys everything and shows you a total. Choose on what you need to see.

What PMax is genuinely better at

Finding demand you were not already capturing. It buys inventory a Shopping campaign cannot reach, it cross-sells across surfaces within one conversion path, and its bidding sees signals that are not exposed in the interface. On total revenue at a fixed budget, it usually wins.

What Standard Shopping is genuinely better at

Being understood. Per-product reporting, per-product bids, clean before-and-after measurement, and the ability to say exactly why a number moved. For diagnosing a catalogue, testing a feed change, or managing a category with unusual margins, that is worth more than incremental reach.

A practical rule: if you cannot explain last month’s result, you do not have a bidding problem, you have a visibility problem, and that is an argument for Standard Shopping on at least part of the catalogue.

Running both

They can coexist, but not neutrally: where a product is eligible in both, PMax generally takes the auction. Splitting by product rather than by campaign, which means excluding a category from PMax and running it in Standard Shopping, is the only structure that gives a clean read.

What does not change either way

The feed. Both campaign types are matched on the same product data, both are built from the same images and titles, and both are eligible in the same auctions. Time spent on the catalogue pays in either structure, which is not true of time spent on campaign architecture.
