The 20 percent CPC advantage

The 20 percent CPC advantage

The number quoted everywhere is 20 percent. It is close to right, it is not a coupon, and where it lands is more interesting than the headline: it reaches the auction itself, which is why it buys impressions rather than just savings.

The discount is a bid multiplier, not a rebate

Google applies the CSS advantage inside the Shopping auction rather than as a line on an invoice. The practical effect is that your money goes further at the moment it competes. A bid of 0.80 euro through a CSS campaign carries the same weight as a bid of 1.00 euro through Google Shopping Europe. That is a 20 percent lower cost per click, or about 25 percent more bidding power for the same budget.

This is why the advantage does not simply show up as a smaller bill. If your budget is the constraint, you get the same clicks for less. If your impression share is the constraint, you win auctions you were losing. Most accounts land somewhere between the two, which is why real-world measurements come out lower than the theoretical figure: data from 2026 puts the effective advantage at 16 to 18 percent in live accounts.

Which campaign types it reaches

Campaign type CSS advantage
Standard Shopping Yes
Performance Max, Shopping placements Yes
Local Inventory Ads Yes
Search No
Display No
YouTube No
Demand Gen No

Performance Max is worth stating carefully, because it is where most Shopping budget now sits. A PMax campaign spends across several inventories, and the CSS advantage applies to the Shopping placements within it. That is where the majority of PMax spend on a retail account goes, but it is not all of it.

How to see it

There is no separate discount line to look at. What you will see is a lower average cost per click on the same products, typically within 24 to 48 hours of the association going live. Two ways to measure it honestly:

  1. Compare a stable period before the switch with the same length of time after it, on the same campaigns and the same season.
  2. Run a parallel test with two Merchant Centers, splitting the catalogue so each product is submitted by one CSS only.

Do not manually cut your bids after switching. Smart Bidding detects the improved auction efficiency within a few days and adjusts on its own; moving bids by hand at the same time makes the result unreadable.

When it is worth it

Cobiro CSS costs 24 euro per month, so the arithmetic is short. At a 20 percent saving, the fee pays for itself at roughly 120 euro of monthly Shopping spend. A merchant spending 5,000 euro a month on Shopping saves in the region of 11,700 euro a year against 288 euro of subscription.
