Performance Max and Shopping

Performance Max and Shopping

Performance Max is where most retail budget now sits, and it is deliberately opaque. Knowing which parts of it are Shopping matters for two reasons: that is where the CSS advantage lands, and that is where the money mostly goes.

What PMax actually is

One campaign that buys across Shopping, Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail and Maps from a single budget, with automated bidding and creative assembled from asset groups. For a retailer with a product feed attached, the Shopping inventory is normally where the majority of the spend goes, because it is where the conversion rate is.

Where the CSS advantage applies

To the Shopping placements inside the campaign, not to the campaign as a whole. The share of a PMax budget that runs on Shopping gets the roughly 20 percent advantage; the share on Display or YouTube does not.

This is why the honest way to describe the advantage on a PMax account is "most of your Shopping spend" rather than "your PMax spend". The gap between those two statements is the non-Shopping inventory.

Getting visibility back

  • Asset group structure. Splitting asset groups by product category is the main lever you still have over where budget goes.
  • Listing groups. The product-level equivalent of product groups, and the way to exclude products you do not want PMax spending on.
  • The channel report. Available through the API and scripts, and the only reliable way to see the Shopping share of spend.
  • Brand exclusions. Without them, PMax will happily buy your own brand traffic and report it as performance.

Feed quality matters more, not less

PMax removes your keyword and placement control and leaves the product data as the main signal you still own. On a Standard Shopping campaign a weak title costs you some queries; on PMax it costs you the campaign’s ability to find the right audience at all. Everything in the feeds chapter has more leverage under PMax than under manual campaigns.

When to run something else

Run Standard Shopping alongside PMax when you need product-level control that PMax will not give you: a launch, a clearance, a category with different margin economics. Be aware that where both are eligible, PMax generally takes the auction, so the two do not split traffic evenly.
