Selling across several countries

Selling across several countries

Cross-border Shopping fails on details that have nothing to do with advertising: a price in the wrong currency, a shipping cost that does not match, a landing page in the wrong language. Almost all of it is feed work.

One account or several

One Merchant Center can serve several countries, and for most merchants it should. Split into separate accounts when the catalogues genuinely differ per market, when different teams own different markets, or when a market needs its own domain and verification. Do not split merely because there are several countries.

CSS is not a reason to split. A single association covers every programme country you advertise in, and if you already run several Merchant Centers each is associated the same way.

What has to be right per market

  • Currency. The feed price has to be in the currency of the target country and match the landing page a buyer from that country sees.
  • Tax. In Europe, prices are expected to include VAT at the destination rate. A single VAT-inclusive price across markets with different rates is a mismatch waiting to happen.
  • Shipping. Configured per country, and accurate. Cross-border shipping costs are the most common source of disapprovals in multi-country accounts.
  • Language. Product data and landing page in the language of the target country. A German-targeted feed with English titles will underperform before it is ever disapproved.
  • Availability. Genuinely per market, if you do not ship everything everywhere.

Feed structure that scales

The pattern that holds up is one primary feed per country or per language, fed from a single source of truth, with supplemental feeds carrying the per-market overrides. Maintaining independent full feeds per market works until the first catalogue change, and then it does not.

Where the CSS advantage lands

On every market inside the programme: the 21 EEA countries, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Spend outside those markets is unaffected, so for a merchant selling into both Europe and North America the advantage applies to the European share of the account and should be measured there rather than across the whole.
