Prompting for product photography

Prompting for product photography

Prompting for commerce is not prompting for art. You are not asking for an interesting image; you are asking for a specific, repeatable, boring one, four thousand times, with the product unchanged.

Describe the photograph, not the product

The product is in the input image. Spending prompt on describing it invites the model to reinterpret it, which is the one thing you do not want. What the prompt is for is everything around the product: the light, the surface, the background, the lens, the framing, the mood.

The vocabulary that actually moves the output

Dimension Terms that work
Light soft diffused, hard directional, rim light, backlit, overcast, golden hour
Source softbox, single window, studio strip light, bounce card
Surface matte white, brushed concrete, oak, linen, brushed steel, marble
Lens 50mm, 85mm, macro, shallow depth of field, deep focus
Framing three-quarter view, flat lay, eye level, low angle, tight crop
Shadow soft contact shadow, long shadow, no shadow, floating

The words that do nothing

  • "High quality", "professional", "8K", "award-winning". These are not instructions; they are hopes.
  • "Beautiful", "stunning", "amazing". Same.
  • Long lists of camera bodies. The lens and the light matter; the body does not.
  • Contradictions. "Soft dramatic lighting" asks for two things and gets an average.

A useful discipline: if you removed a phrase and could not predict how the image would change, it was not doing anything. Cut it.

Negatives are as important as positives

For commerce, the most valuable part of a prompt is often what it forbids: no text, no logos, no watermarks, no hands, no additional props, no reflections of a studio. Every one of those is a thing models add helpfully and Merchant Center rejects.

One prompt per category, not per product

The output you want is consistency, so the prompt should be a template with product-specific values filled from the feed rather than written per item. That also makes the whole thing reproducible: when you change the look in six months, you change one template and re-render, instead of reconstructing four thousand improvisations.
